With frost still clinging to every frozen nook and cranny it's hard to imagine that in just two short months winter will be over and Spring will arrive! Certainly mosquitoes are the last thing you're thinking about as you shovel snow from your driveway but Heartworm Season is less than 45 days away!
For those of you with adult dogs, heartworm season is no big surprise -- the annual Springtime visit is just a part of life. But for those of you new to the puppy parenting game this will all be new! Heartworm is a parasite that is spread when a dog is bitten by an infected mosquito. Once the parasite enters the bloodstream it travels to the heart where it grows into long worms that clog the heart with deadly consequences. Luckily preventing this serious disease is easy -- a simple preventive medication given once a month during our mosquito season (June-November) can protect your pooch from the deadly effects of heartworm disease. Click here to learn more about Heartworm Disease and the importance of annual testing and prevention. For Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Heartworm Disease please click here.
APRIL 1ST IS FAST APPROACHING WHICH MEANS HEARTWORM SEASON IS ON ITS WAY!
